update (Caity)

Hi everyone,
A few orders of business about Team Green here. This is going to be kind of a fatty email... sorry. So leading up to now we (I) have had some communication problems getting meetings scheduled, getting emails to people, etc. However, that is mostly all taken care of now (hopefully). On to bigger/better things....

#1: We have a bottle drive scheduled for this coming MONDAY DECEMBER 10th. The plan is to all meet by the custodian's office at the beginning of lunch. In case you don't know where that is it's basically at theintersection between the back hall and the 200 hall. Then we will all get into pairs, each pair will grab chairs and a bin and head to an entrance of the school for the rest of the lunch period. This way we can make sure all the empty bottles coming back into the school actually are recycled. NOTE: each pair will be in charge of making sure their bin is only filled with bottles and no grotesque lunch left-overs. If you guys have the time to come up with a little piece of paper/poster/display to set up either on a table or by the bins about why recycling water bottles is a good idea that would be really helpful so we can add an educational component to it.
Here is a site with stats about plastic:

#2: Next event is planned for MONDAY DECEMBER 17th assuming supplies ship in time. The group that did get the message about could attend the meeting last week decided it would be fun to hold a cloth bag decorating event during lunch. The idea would be that people could by a few dollars (we are thinking between 2 and 3ish for now?) to come and decorate a bag (that they could keep) with fabric paints and markers etc. The hope would be that they would use the bag instead of a plastic or paper bag at grocery stores. To plan for this we have a meeting next WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 13TH DURING LUNCH. (Room 726)

#3: Recycling in the cafeteria is struggling a little. First and foremost, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make sure you have signed up for at least 4 shifts. If you haven't do so in the office. As of right now, the recycling bins in the cafeteria are going to get very lonely, very full and very disgusting the last 2 months of school. (The way we set it up there should be enough people to cover the whole year if everyone takes 4 shifts.) Next, a guess students are still struggling with where to put their trash/recyclable materials. If anyone is willing to come sometime next week during lunch and sit by the bins with the core leaders that would be awesome. We may have more people than we need on Monday to man the entrances for bottles so extras could head over to the cafeteria. At very least just anytime you are in the cafeteria (if ever...?) tell the people you are with how to recycle. Cool conversation starter.

Okay that was a beast of an email and I apologize. I'm also really sorry to anyone who has been out of the loop thanks to my inability to successfully communicate to large group of people . LASTLY: if any of you have a facebook it would be awesome if you friended me/let me know/ joined the group I am about to make. Facebook messages have been more effective than emails. Also, if anyone could pass this on to Lauren Graebner that would be really helpful... and tell her I need her email address.

Thank you thank you thank you for reading this whole thing and I'm sorry I basically gave you an extra reading assignment on top of any homework you have.

Caity's group ideas

For those who didn't make it to the last meeting (Nov. 13), here is what Caity and I went over:

-Focus on getting local stores to somehow deter customers from using paper and (preferably) plastic bags, and to instead use cloth bags.

The first store to target will most likely be Market of Choice on Willamette - as in the past when asked about the bag issue, they were much more supportive of our Team Green involvement than other stores.

There are two ways to go about this:
1.) during a good time to meet as a group (like say during lunch of after school) we could work with cloth bags that we have bought and paint the bags to then be distributed to other students at South (..I could be wrong about the last part).

2.) go to MOC and, for instance, stand outside their store entrance and advertise their own MOC cloth bags (which they sell inside the store) to shoppers when they walk in. Not only will selling cloth bags keep shoppers from using paper or plastic that day they are shopping, but each successive grocery trip they will logically continue using their cloth bags - further decreasing usage of paper and plastic bags. Moreover, we would simply be selling for MOC - so in essence, they should be paying us to do it (but obviously it would be more of a community service kind of thing). But the point is this idea could be very productive towards lessening paper and plastic bag usage.

If anyone has any comments or questions, feel free to leave a message by clicking on the little pencil icon below this post.

The next meeting is TBD (I think?).
